Frequently Asked Questions about The National Journalism Center

Q:  How does NJC work?

A:  The NJC pays $1000/month stipend to accepted interns for the 12-week internship program.  This allows interns to work at unpaid internships in Washington, D.C. and the surrounding area.  In exchange for the $1000 monthly stipend, NJC requires all interns to attend weekly half-day seminars, occasional special events and complete research and writing assignments.

The NJC does not provide housing, but the stipend assists in covering housing and other living expenses.

Q:  Does the NJC provide housing?

A:  No, however NJC has many resources and information to assist in your housing search. More information can also be found in the NJC Welcome Guide.

Q:  Why should I choose the NJC program?

A:  The NJC offers not just the opportunities of interning at top notch news organizations, but we offer seminars that will improve your writing and make your skills marketable to prospective employers.  The other benefits would be hearing from exciting, well known speakers and being connected to NJC alumni across the country and around the world.

Q:  What are you seeking in a candidate?

A:  The NJC would like a candidate who possesses strong writing skills with some journalism experience.  The ideal intern would have excellent interpersonal skills and be pursuing a college degree or have already finished college.

Q:  How do I apply?

A:  Please apply through our online website:  http://njc.yaf.org.  After filling out the online application, please e-mail a cover letter detailing why you want to intern at the NJC, resume, 3 references and 2-3 writing samples in Microsoft Word format or PDFs to Lauren Smith. Materials can also be faxed to 202-628-1491, or mailed to our offices here in Washington, D.C.

Q:  What writing samples do you prefer?

A:  Ultimately, we would like interns to have news clips (preferably in the inverted pyramid format:  AP Style).  However, we recognize that some candidates might not have news clips.  For these candidates, please send us a writing sample that clearly demonstrates your writing ability. For applicants interested in broadcast, you are welcome to send samples of the scripts for broadcast segments or DVDs with clips of your news stories.

Q:  What is the next step in the NJC application process?

A:  The Academic Director will look over your application materials.  If we are interested, you will receive a call to schedule an interview. The interview process consists of two interviews, a first-round phone interview, then a second-round interview, either in person or by phone.

Q:  Can I receive academic credit for my internship?

A:  No, the NJC does not offer academic credit.  If you are receiving college credit for this internship, we request that all paperwork will be handled by your internship placement.
